DOT Physical Q & A

What is a DOT physical?

DOT physicals are comprehensive physical examinations completed by your Oasis Healthcare Service, Inc., provider to ensure you’re healthy enough to operate a commercial motor vehicle, such as a bus or semi-truck.

Your employer may require DOT physicals, which are often needed every two years or less if you have a specific medical condition.

Being healthy enough to drive a commercial motor vehicle is important for your own safety and the safety of others on the road. In addition, it ensures you can effectively perform your job duties.

What should I bring with me to a DOT exam?

When you arrive at Oasis Healthcare Service, Inc., for a DOT physical exam, plan to bring the following:

  • Photo ID
  • List of medications and doses
  • Vaccination records
  • A form of payment
  • Medical release form if you have a disability

During a DOT physical, be prepared to discuss your medical history and symptoms (if you have any) with your primary care specialist.

What happens during a DOT physical?

When you arrive for a DOT physical, your specialist assesses your weight, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs. Troy completes a physical exam to evaluate your eyes, ears, throat, breathing, heartbeat, reflexes, and more.

Troy and his team complete vision and hearing screening and may order a urine test, blood test, heart function testing, or other diagnostic tests that detect or rule out specific medical problems. They review your vaccination records, too, and offer additional vaccines if needed.

Troy may recommend lifestyle changes, medications, vision correction, or specialist referrals if you have an illness, disease, or vision problems.

You might need a release form from a specialist if you have a pre-existing condition or disability. Troy can answer any questions and address any concerns you may have about your health and wellness.

What happens after a DOT examination?

After passing the exam, Troy completes a DOT medical examiner’s certificate, which allows you to drive a commercial motor vehicle for up to two years if you’re in good health. However, if you have a medical condition, you may need more frequent DOT physicals.
